New warning labels for short-form videos on social media

Labels nicam

N ICAM is introducing Kijkwijzer Online, a new system featuring warning labels for short-form videos on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. The labels clearly indicate in advance when a video may contain potentially harmful content, such as violence, animal cruelty, frightening or shocking images, strong language, or alcohol and drug use. This helps young people better understand what to expect and allows them to decide for themselves whether or not they want to watch a video.

Know what you can expect in a video

Children and young people watch a lot of short-form videos on social media. While scrolling, they are regularly exposed to disturbing images. Previous research by NICAM shows that young people want to know in advance when a video contains such images, as well as what type of content they can expect.

Content creators rate their own content

The warning labels are applied by content creators themselves. Under the Dutch Media Act, they are required to inform their audiences in order to prevent young people from being exposed to overly disturbing images. NICAM supports them in implementing the system. Content creators register with NICAM to be able to assess their content for potentially harmful elements.

NICAM supports content creators
NICAM helps content creators determine whether their content may be potentially harmful to children. They can register with NICAM to receive guidance on how to assess their content. Based on this guidance, they can choose to adapt their content or warn viewers in advance about potentially harmful images.
