Kijkwijzer warns parents and children whether a film, series or television programme may be harmful for children of a certain age.
To do this, Kijkwijzer uses age recommendations: All Ages, 6 years old, 9 years old, 12 years old, 14 years old, 16 years old and 18 years old.
Kijkwijzer also uses pictograms that show the reason for a certain age recommendation: violence, fear, sex, discrimination, drug- and/or alcohol abuse, and coarse language.
The European Committee considers Kijkwijzer to be best practice when it comes to handling the protection of minors from harmful imagery. The Kijkwijzer system has been licensed to Turkey, Iceland, Slovenia and Belgium and was the model for both PEGI and YouRateIt.
